Is Your Teenager Ready to Learn to Drive?

If you were a teenager now, then one of your main priorities would be to learn how to drive. Do you remember how it was when you were a teen? Can you imagine the pressure of learning how to drive in today’s society? However, as a parent, you need to make sure that your teenager is indeed ready to learn how to drive. Car crashes happen very often, and it’s one of the leading causes of death among teenagers not only in Australia but all around the world as well, so it’s important to be sure when to let your teenager drive. So, if you’re not sure if your teenager is ready to learn to drive or not, take a look:

Are they old enough to drive?

First and foremost, you need to make sure that your kid is indeed old enough to drive and take driving classes. Sometimes parents make their child take their driving classes even before they are old enough to drive, which might be a big mistake. The best thing would be to wait for your teenager to reach that certain age and only then enroll them in a driving school. Why? Well, they might not be old enough to understand the risks of driving and everything that comes with it.

Are they mature enough to drive?

In order to drive safely, it’s not only important to pass your driving test and obtain your driving license. Driving safely is so much more than that. Not only should the driver follow certain rules, assess risks and make quick and safe decisions along the way, but they should also be mature enough to know that they shouldn’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The latter might be the biggest problem when teenagers are concerned, and this is the main reason why you should think carefully about this matter.

Are they mature enough to drive?

Can they take advice?

Teenagers will be teenagers, and it’s very challenging to find someone they will listen to. Since they’re not very big fans of teachers in general, it’s quite possible that they will not like their driving instructor either. That’s why you should play your cards right and let them choose their driving instructor themselves. There are companies such as the great driving school EzLicence that will let anyone find and choose their driving instructor online. Once your teenager chooses the person he or she wants, the chances of them listening carefully to all of the pieces of advice are actually very high.

Are they able to concentrate?

Teenagers have so much on their minds and they find it very difficult to concentrate on one matter for a longer period of time. Now, the streets are always very busy, and not only with drivers. There are also other people there such as pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists and even buses, which means that their concentration needs to be on point. Try to see if your teenagers can concentrate and focus at all times and if they can multitask. Driving also requires multitasking, so it’s an important skill to have.

Can they be alert for driving?

Next up, let’s talk about other activities your teenager has during the day. For example, one of the crucial things that need to be in balance here is sleep. If your teenager spends a lot of time playing video games and then yawning the next day, encourage them to establish a regular sleep routine before they opt for driving classes. The driving environment changes very quickly and a good driver should be alert at all times. Not only do they need to identify potential dangers but also make rash decisions and react appropriately in a matter of seconds.

Will you help them learn?

Finally, ask yourself if you have enough time to help them learn how to drive and to put all of the knowledge they acquired with the driving instructor into effect. A parent should be there once their teenager starts his or her driving lessons and always offer support and coaching. Bear in mind that you need to be positive and supportive as this is one of the most important ways to make your child confident in their driving.

Before you actually pay for any driving classes, make sure to answer all of the questions from above. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, so let your teenager drive only when you decide it’s time.
