We’ve had this argument a dozen times over the decades. Apple is the company responsible for bringing computers to the mainstream market. But for a while now, Windows has been the go-to platform for many people, especially gamers. It’s an age-old argument that’s been done dozens of times. So what’s the actual final answer? Which is the best OS for gaming right now?
Age-Old
We’ll be putting an end to that debate, but it’s not as simple as one might think it is. We’ll also be throwing Linux into the mix to make a comprehensive argument. So keep reading to find the OS which is right for you.

PC is, without a doubt, the most profitable and popular platform in the gaming industry. As a result, many publishers and developers are actually pushing out PC exclusives because the market is so big. Furthermore, we won’t blame you if Windows is the first OS to mind when PC gaming is mentioned.
Despite all of the bugs, annoying updates and crashes, Windows has been the go-to platform for many gamers. Windows 10 is the current iteration of Microsoft’s OS, and most people have jumped ship to it. But why is it the default choice for so many people?
Well, the library is probably the biggest reason why. Steam gained its footing on Windows, and that’s why you see all the PC titles making their way to Windows first. Even if we push Steam out of the way, we have other services such as game subscriptions that are only on Windows.
Apart from that, Windows works. It’s what you expect when you fire up a game. Performance isn’t hindered, you can use third-party peripherals, and new features find their way to Windows first as well.
Anyone who’s a Windows user will tell you the same thing. Windows is the default choice.
If you ask someone why they use Linux as their main OS, gaming won’t be the top reason. That’s because it’s not what Linux was initially made for. Linux is supposed to be the base platform for developers. This is where a lot of major apps and even other operating systems are made. Initially, Linux was preferred by professional programmers because code runs very efficiently on Linux.
But that doesn’t mean Linux is far behind in the gaming scene. It has about 25%-30% of Windows’ Steam library. Non-native games perform well, despite a few hiccups. Although a few select games have horrible optimization, it’s not as bad as it was a couple of years ago. So availability and performance aren’t all that bad.
However, Linux is hindered because it doesn’t have a lot of third party support. Sure, you can get controllers and other stuff working, but they require a bit of tinkering around. This could be a dealbreaker for the casual user, especially if you’re used to just firing up a game in Windows.
macOS is the operating system used by Apple in all of their Mac products. The MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac and even the Mac mini all use the same OS. If you’ve ever seen an Apple advert for a Mac product, you’ll never see gaming mentioned in any way, shape or form.
That’s because macOS is a completely locked-down operating system. It is very optimized, and the apps that are designed for it work quite well. This is why a lot of film-makers, music producers and other professionals use MacOS and its applications.
Games aren’t the main priority here. There is just a tiny portion of the Windows library, consisting of the most popular games. So don’t expect to see any hidden Indie gems on this platform. The performance also isn’t the same compared to Windows or even Linux.
However, if you are a working professional and you want to fire up a game sometime, it’s not all bad. The popular games do work well. If you want to mess around even more, you can dual-boot Windows using Bootcamp. But we doubt the average person will be doing that.
So there you have it, folks. If you’re still looking for the answer from the title, it’s Windows. It’s the platform that works best with games. However, if the other two work well for your scenario, they’re not that bad either.
